How much does whole house repiping cost in the Carolinas?
Published local ranges for a polybutylene to PEX repipe run from about $3,500 to $12,000, driven by square footage, number of bathrooms and wall access.
If your home was built in the late 1970s through the mid 1990s, there is a real chance it has polybutylene supply pipe. If it was built before that, it may have galvanized steel that is rusting from the inside.
Repiping is a big job, so we walk the house, map the system and give you a written scope before you commit.
Signs you need whole house repiping
- Grey or blue plastic supply lines in the crawl space, attic or near the water heater
- Low water pressure that keeps getting worse
- Brown or discolored water
- Repeated pinhole leaks
- Home inspection that flagged polybutylene or galvanized pipe
How we handle it
- Inspect and map the existing supply system.
- Choose PEX or copper based on budget and house layout.
- Phase the work to keep the house livable, typically in one to a few days.
- Pressure test, patch access holes and walk you through the new shutoffs.

What is different about the Carolinas
Polybutylene was widely used in subdivisions across the Carolinas during the late 1970s through the mid 1990s, so it shows up in a lot of Raleigh, Cary, Charlotte and Rock Hill neighborhoods. Older in town homes in Myers Park, Dilworth, Oakwood and Trinity Park may still carry galvanized lines.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have polybutylene?
Look for grey or blue flexible plastic pipe near the water heater, the main shutoff or in a crawl space. Markings may include PB.
PEX or copper?
PEX is faster and less expensive and handles minor freezing better. Copper lasts a long time and some owners prefer it. We price both.
Will the house be without water?
Usually for part of each day. We phase the work so you have water at night.
Do I need a permit?
Most jurisdictions require one for repiping and inspection afterward. We handle it.
